Meals Ready to Eat

07 Jun

It’s tough to resist the sizzlin’ sounds and delicious smells coming from our Diabetes Education Kitchen. You won’t have to if you attend one of our free Putting It On the Plate cooking demonstrations. Registered Dietitian Margaret Earnest shows you healthy and practical meal ideas for you to use at home and samples for you to enjoy after the lesson.

The last class of the 2013 season offered Meals Ready to Eat – cooking food and then freezing it to help save time and to keep your house from heating up during the summer. Margaret introduced seven recipes. She also suggested – if cooking for one, try cooking for three to four people instead and then freeze individual servings.

At the end of the demonstration, Margaret gave food containers as gifts to the audience so they could portion out their meals for the freezer. One piece of advice she gave with the containers, “Rethink your plate. Put your vegetables in the biggest portion and your meat and carbohydrate in the smaller one.”
